Dejavato Indonesia Newsletter (2)

Dejavato IndonesiaMid Term Volunteer (MTV) from AFS Nederland
Our MTV volunteer has been doing activities with us already 1 month and so far she really enjoyed with the projects, and she still have 1 month remaining.

Fourth Week (21/7 – 27/7). Excursion on Karimunjawa Island. The Karimunjawa Islands is located on the north of Java Island, it’s about 90 kilometers north east of Semarang. It is a group of islands which are located between Java Island and Kalimantan Island. The main big islands are Karimunjawa, Kemujan, Menjangan Besar, and Menjangan Kecil. The population in Karimunjawa is about 4000 people. The islands are part of Jepara Regency.

Dejavato IndonesiaTo reach the islands by taking speed boat from Semarang, KARTINI Boat, which leaves once in a week ( every Saturday at 09.00) and back on Sunday at 02.00 pm. It takes about 3.5 hours from Semarang to the islands. Another way is by taking a ferry from Jepara Town every Saturday and Wednesday and takes about 6 hours!

She left Semarang to the islands by Kartini Speed Boat in the morning and arrived in the islands at noon accompanied by one of Dejavato’s volunteers. During the program, they stayed at Mr. Arif’s family as one of our very good local partner and friend in that island. Dejavato Indonesia

During their stay in Karimunjawa, by small wooden boat they visited some other small islands like Cemara Kecil and Menjangan Kecil islands where have very beautiful coral and reefs as their place for snorkeling. Karimunjawa is wellknown as one of the best snorkeling and diving area in Indonesia or even in the world, because they still have very natural and beautiful corals. She also spent her time for relax by sun bathing on the white sand beaches and reading her favorite books:)

Dejavato IndonesiaThey also visited Menjangan Besar Island where there is some ponds for breeding sharks, turtles and fish. She also got challenge in Dejavato Fear Factor to swim with sharks in the sharks’ pond.

She and one of Dejavato’s volunteers also explored the island by going around the island by motorbike. They visited the mangrove forest, Kampung Bugis (traditional kampong with their typical of housing), Legon Bajak (Pirates Lagoon), enjoyed the sunset at harbor and other sides of the islands.

Free Week (30/7 – 4/8). She did teaching English program in SMP 3 (Junior High School 3) and as she is student of Nursing Academy in Holland, she also wants to do voluntary works related with her major by doing voluntary work at PUSKESMAS (Public Health Center) in Semarang. She also joining homestay program, by staying with Indonesian family in Semarang.



Mid Term Volunteer (MTV) from VFP USA
Dejavato IndonesiaDEJAVATO hosts a volunteer from VFP USA, for joining the MTV (Mid Term Volunteer) at Sokawera Village from 01st to 30th July 2007. She is our first American volunteer hosted by Dejavato, and we are very proud to have her.

She chose Sokawera Village as her project site which is located about 150 kilometers on the South West of Semarang city, Dejavato Indonesiathat can be reached about 6 hours by car. Her main activity is teaching English for local students at Argowilis Center as well as local people who are interested in learning English. Besides, she also have additional activities like learning making coconut sugar, fishing, making tofu, planting rice, playing traditional musical instrument “Calung”, and excursion with her host family. She is very active in joining the local communities meeting, discussion and seminar. She was asked to be speaker for giving motivation for the local mothers quite often.

Dejavato IndonesiaOn 23/7 – 4/8, in Sokawera village where she has the project, Dejavato held Dejavato - IWO Korea Bilateral Camp with 21 participants from Korea and Indonesia. Dejavato IndonesiaShe also joined the work camp especially working with the group in construction and renovation work of local school building. She also joined other group activities including cultural exchange activities.

Dejavato IndonesiaOn 29/7, Dejavato held farewell party for her by having dinner and “karaoke” with Dejavato volunteers and other MTV volunteers. As our appreciation for the energy that she had spent during the project, Dejavato presented an appreciation certificate after finishing her project. On 30/7, she left for Bali Island to continue her holidays. Thank you so much for your big contribution, ideas, and support! we gonna miss you so much!! You’re really a DANCING QUEEN!!


Mid Term Volunteer (MTV) from Germany
Dejavato IndonesiaShe takes one month MTV project at Dejavato by choosing the PUSKESMAS (Public Health Center) in Semarang City, as she is student of nursing. She started her project on 6th July 2007. During her stay in Semarang, she is hosted by local staff of Puskesmas.

During joining the project, she will have project in two different PUSKESMAS. In the first 2 weeks she does voluntary works at PUSKESMAS Karangayu, then continue to PUSKESMAS Pandanaran for next two weeks.

Dejavato IndonesiaHer main activity is assisting local doctors by doing various tasks that hopefully will enrich her experience and knowledge about Indonesian health system. On her base Puskesmas Karangayu, she helps the local doctor in visiting and examine the patients, taking part in Posyandu ( Regular Public Service) for babies, mothers and elder people.

On 28/7, She had opportunity to visit the Korean Group Camp in Sokawera village, together with other MTV volunteers. She also took a apart in doing renovation and construction work with Korean volunteers.

On 31/7, She finished her first term project at Puskesmas Karangayu. Starting on 1/8, she does her a ctivities at Puskesmas Pandanaran which is located near to the downtown.
